Shihan Mike McGarry - 6th Dan Goshin Ju Jitsu

Mike 'Mad Dog' McGarry

Mike is currently the England Sports Ju Jitsu Squad Director, and holds the World Masters Lightweight Title after winning Gold at the World Championships in Las Vegas in Sept 2010.

With nearly 30 years of experience in martial arts, Shihan Mike 'Mad Dog' McGarry is a highly motivated, dedicated, enthusiastic yet open minded Instructor.

Mike started Ju-jitsu in 1981 under Hansei McKenzie-Smith of the then British Bushido Association and achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt in 1984. He has also been very fortunate to have trained with other top class instructors in various martial arts including Sensei Paul Simpson his long term training partner, powerhouse of a martial artist, and mentor without whom he would not continue to strive for perfection. Mike also spent 6 years training under Sensei Del Hooper the most formidable Go-Jo Ryu Full Contact Karate exponents in the South (you will know what I mean if you have every sparred with him!). Mike has also spent some time training with 'Marvelous' Marvin Palmer, European Kick Boxing Champion who's speed and striking power are beyond words. As well as many others including Ian 'The Machine' Freeman of UFC and Cage Rage Fame, the Maltese Defence Squad, various divisions of the Armed Forces and many local schools and clubs.

Over many years of training Mike has competed in various tournaments, from Judo to Full Contact Karate and won many competitions including the IBA 'all styles' Open 5 years in a row. In addition he has also instructed at many seminars in the UK and abroad, including women's self-defence, close combat, weapons defence and street defence.

In July 09 Mike stepped in as a substitute fighter in the WCJJO Nations Sports Ju Jitsu Championship against the Swiss National Team in the finals. Even though he was in the next weight catergory up and fighting a much younger opponent Mike proved his worth by winning the first round on points and the second by submission.
