Ju-Jitsu

The modern system of Goshin-Jitsu (Self-Defence Ju-jitsu) is based on the same principles as Tenjin-Shinyo Ryu but has been adapted for modern environment. A simple explanation is to think of Ju-jitsu as a combination of Karate (kicks and punches), Aikido (locks and holds) and Judo (throws and hold downs) all mixed together with pressure points and then remove the sporting rules. Our aim is to take our students through the basic principles of the techniques and to then show them how to use them in a real life modern scenario (as with all things you must learn to walk before you run!)

The advantages that Ju-jitsu has over other martial arts (as demonstrated time again in all the MMA/UFC/open competitions) is the range of techniques available. These advantages become even more apparent when applied to the different street situations that can arise. You may not always want to harm the person 'attacking' you, they may just be a drunk friend in need of some restraint. When you have only kicks and punches in your techniques, it becomes difficult to 'gently' subdue or restrain them. In most fights on the street it starts with a few wild punches thrown in an attempt to knock you out quickly. If this is unsuccessful a standing clinch/grappling phase follows which usually descends to the floor and ends in a messy ground fight. Sometimes only one of the fighters ends on the floor, the most dangerous position to be in. Each of these phases of the fight require different and specialised techniques and a good knowledge of how to gain the best position in which to apply them. Only Ju-jitsu has the techniques to deal with all of these scenarios.
